At 103 years young, Nevonne has a way of making everyone around her smile.
Recently, the Interfaith Caregivers team had the privilege of helping Nevonne obtain a wheelchair, giving her an easier way to move safely and comfortably around her home. While it may seem like a simple piece of equipment, it represents something much greater: the ability to maintain her independence and continue living life on her own terms.
Not long after receiving her wheelchair, Nevonne surprised our office with a thoughtful gift.
She baked a fresh batch of homemade cookies for our staff as a thank you.
To some, it may have looked like a plate of cookies. To us, it represented so much more.
At Interfaith Caregivers, we believe that supporting older adults means more than meeting practical needs. It means helping people maintain their independence while preserving the dignity that comes from continuing to make choices, contributing to others, and expressing gratitude in meaningful ways.
Nevonne wasn’t simply receiving help. She was doing what she has likely done throughout her life: showing appreciation by caring for others. Her homemade cookies reminded us that kindness is never one-sided and that every person, regardless of age, has something valuable to give.
Moments like these are why our mission matters. Whether it’s providing a ride to a medical appointment, a friendly visit, help with grocery shopping, or connecting someone with the equipment they need, our goal is to help older adults remain independent, engaged, and connected to their community.
Nevonne’s story is a beautiful reminder that when we help someone maintain their independence, we also help preserve the dignity, purpose, and generosity that make them who they are.
