When Tom retired from a long career as a commercial lines underwriter, he wanted to do some volunteer work. “It’s part of my fundamental belief that we should help one another,” explains Tom.
When Jane Latini, Executive Director of Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, spoke at his congregation, the Church of St. Ann in Lawrenceville, he found the opportunity he was looking for.
Tom volunteered to transport care-receivers to and from medical appointments. At first he was helping several different people, but soon developed a bond with a visually-impaired woman who lived nearby and also happened to attend the same church.
“We get along and just enjoy one another’s company,” says Tom. “It feels like we have created a sense of community that is so hard to find these days, where neighbors look after neighbors and everyone is happier for it.”
