Helping Seniors Stay Strong & Live Independently

Project Healthy Bones is an osteoporosis prevention exercise and education program for older women and men at risk for, or who have osteoporosis.

This 24-week, free exercise program targets the body’s larger muscle groups. It is  designed to improve strength, balance and flexibility – crucial to preventing falls and broken bones in the senior population.

In addition, Project Healthy Bones participants learn about the importance of exercise, nutrition, safety, drug therapy, and lifestyle factors that relate to osteoporosis. Another important benefit of the program is opportunity for social engagement of its participants.

Launched by our agency in 2012, this beneficial program is provided through a partnership between the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and the North Jersey Regional Arthritis Center, Morristown Medical Center.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability in older adults, especially women. A bone-weakening disorder, osteoporosis often results in fractures in the hip and spine — which can severely impair elderly mobility and independence.

The good news is that osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related disability is preventable and treatable. With appropriate treatment, including programs such as Project Healthy Bones, individuals can experience up to a 70% reduction in risk of fracture.

What PHB Program Participants Are Saying...

It has provided me with the awareness that changes can be made to reverse bone loss or maintain present level.
Osteoporosis has been with me for a number of years. These classes give me hope that I can work on being in charge of it rather than letting it take over my life. These classes are a gift to me.

Mary L.

PHB has helped me be more consistent in doing the exercises—the group setting, the class commitment and the people all keep me interested and committed to keeping it up.
